It was reported on March 29, 2018 that more than 150 million users’ data of a popular fitness app called MyFitnessPal had been hacked. The data which was stolen comprised of the users’ usernames, email addresses and passwords. This company then immediately notified their users through emails and in-app messaging after they had noticed than there was unauthorized access to the data on February. The company then urged the users to change their passwords immediately. Unfortunately, it is still unclear who had orchestrated the data breach which stole the data of millions of users.
Under Armour, MyFitnessPal’s parent company, then claimed that their users’ financial information were not affected by the breach in any way. The damage caused by this incident is considered moderate since the company does not collect any government-issued identifiers like driver’s license numbers or social security numbers. Currently, the company is working on figuring out how the hackers had the ability to get into their system without being noticed.
And although having your fitness and dietary progress stolen by a hacker may seem like it’s not much of a big deal, it still holds more power if you look at the bigger picture. For instance, the app has the capability to know the precise performance and location of its users. Meaning, if someone else has access to a user’s account, they will be able to know where exactly a user is and how fast the user is going. Whoever holds the user’s data may then be able to track them down, putting the users in potential danger.
Securing Your Data
This incident is an important reminder for everyone that any type of data can easily be hacked in this age of modern technology. Here then, are some of the most important tips and tricks that one can do in order to individually secure their private data.
Setting Complex Passwords
Though a lot of people prefer using generic and easy passwords, it is still best to put some thought and effort in setting your passwords. Though it is a very small detail, hackers may still end up having a hard time in cracking your password if you set it into a difficult one, thus protecting your account until the issue is fixed.
2. Reading Through the Terms and Services Conditions
While most people like to skip on reading the terms and services, it is still of great importance for the users to have knowledge about what the company plans on doing with the data that they share with the app. It is of great importance that the users are aware of what the app can do.
While breaches like these are becoming common today and companies have the ability to protect their users, it is still important that the users take precautionary measures in protecting their private information.
